Less than 2 hours until kick-off

So, I don’t have a lot of hobbies. I would like to think that my hobbies are family, friends, Dallas Cowboys then work, but actually its work, work, work, family, friends and then the Cowboys, but today, NO work, only Cowboys and family, as I already have my Roy Williams jersey on (I’m sure Mark Holt, Managing Partner of our Memphis office has his Tony Romo jersey on) and the family and I sitting around eating nachos, zingers, drinking beer and watching the Cowboys on opening day! Thanks Direct TV for the free day of NFL package.pht_2007squad

Gave Away a Twitter Account

September 11, 2009 evoklarry 1 comment

So, we lost the Sonnys BBQ pitch to Enguage. I hate that part of our industry – song and dance for free, but that is for another time.

Enguage is a national agency with a local Orlando office. We compete with them a lot, it seems. We’re similar size, capabilities etc., but we’re local, so I didn’t like losing a local piece of business to an “outside firm,” but that is for another time.

Enguage is headed by Barb Scherer, someone I really like. She’s smart, savvy and just overall, a good egg. I actually tried to get her to cone to EVOK once or twice before, but that is for another time.

Today, it’s about the letting go of a Twitter account. When we pitched Sonnys, we included social media in our pitch and acquired Sonny’s Twitter Account and earlier in the week, we got a call from the winning agency (Barb) requesting the account. We gave it up, but it was a reminder of the loss and I’ve had better days.

Sonnys is just lucky Barb’s shop beat us and she called or it would have turned into a fan page of my son’s BBQ, and I don’t even have a son. Maybe that is for another time.

“copywriting” was spelled wrong

September 11, 2009 evoklarry Leave a comment

Ok, so I got a resume today for a copywriting position and the word “copywriting” was spelled wrong. here was my email response…too harsh?

Well, the word “copywriting” is misspelled in your resume, but other than that…

Seriously, I had to take a stab at you for that. If you can’t take jabs, you could never make it around here.

We have a copywriter extraordinaire in Deedee Marinaccio but she is taking some time off and on during the remainder of the year and we might be freelancing out some work, and you never know where that will lead if we grow the department, but you’d have to “take her out” to get her gig and then, with all the suspicion, the cops…I’m not sure. If you can send me some writing samples, without typos, I’ll share with our CD.

:)

Good Luck Mark

So, Scott came through with three great ideas for promotional sales campaigns for Mark’s pitch tomorrow at 4:00. We sent out storyboards and have a pre-meeting conference call with Mark tomorrow for some “go get ‘em” / “win one for the Gipper” / “you deserve this – bring it home” stuff. Mark will be fine. This is our first entrance into the new client, and I can only see good things ahead with them. We really have the tools to help them achieve their goals. This is a good fit, not just a monetary pitch.

Looking forward to the day or the end of it?

Today is a weird day. I start off with b2b account manager meetings, which is good, but also stressful. This is the time where client “issues” are uncovered, and since I’m a hard-to-please kind of guy, I can sometimes make mountains out of molehills. The most important thing I can do this morning is remember that I have confidence in my team and that they’re working as hard and as fast as they can to exceed client expectations.

Next, I have to see where we are creatively on two big pitches – one Friday in our Memphis office and one Tuesday in Orlando. My biz partner has been MIA a lot lately, vacation/holiday/sick, so my fear is we’re running behind.

Next, I have a meeting with what should already be a client. We competed for their business against two other prominent Orlando shops and won it, but we’re dragging getting the ball rolling. Not me, the client. They travel a lot, but I hope to resolve any contract issues today and get started, especially with the billing – we have a ton of time into winning the account.

All the while, we’re waiting to see if we won our pitch last week and trying to carve out some time to vet some RFPs whose due dates are fast approaching.

You can see that I’ll be doing very little “ad guy” work today and a lot of “ad agency owner” work. I prefer the former but find I’m doing more and more of the latter.

I guess cream cheese needs to be spread evenly over the bagel and hopefully we can afford to keep buying bagels.

If you lose a pitch?

How long do you have to wait if you hear rumblings that the account you didn’t win is unhappy with the agency that did? The day you hear it?
